Coba Archaeological Site

Coba Archaeological SiteDeep in the heart of the Quintana Roo jungle and only 24 miles from southwest of Tulum, approximately 2 1/2 south of Cancun is COBA, an archaeological site that dates from the Classis period. Unlike other Mayan sites in Quintana Roo, Coba was still occupied after the Spanish Conquest.. This incredible Site once occupied an area of almost 100 square kilometers (60 st. miles). The pyramid of Nohoch Mul-43 meters (130 ft.) high-is the tallest pre-Hispanic structure in the Yucatan peninsula.
The main pyramids are the Coba Group, near the entrance, Las Pinturas, named because of the color still visible on the arches; the Macanxoc, located next to Macanxoc Lake; and Chumuc Mul, the main "stucco" pyramid which still contains its original color.
